Sunday Vespers (Evening Prayer) and Teachings is a new offering at the Cathedral that takes place each week from 5:30-6:30PM.
Vespers is celebrated in the main church of the Cathedral, begining at 5:30PM and concluding at 6:00PM. The Psalms are chanted in the gregorian tones - the ancient and beautiful musical tradition of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church.
Following Vespers, from 6:00PM until 6:30PM a brief teaching is offered in the Cathedral Chapel on some aspect of the Catholic faith. Please see the schedule below for more information about upcoming topics and presenters.
Casco Bay Catholics, the young adult group for Catholics in the Greater Portland area, often goes out for dinner following the teachings.
The Vatican Council document "Sacrosanctum Concilium" specifically encouraged parishes to pray Sunday Vespers as a community: "Pastors of souls should see to it that the chief hours, especially Vespers, are celebrated in common in church on Sundays and the more solemn feasts. And the laity, too, are encouraged to recite the divine office, either with the priests, or among themselves, or even individually(pp100)"
