“The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value,
greater even than that of any other art.” -Sacrosanctum Concilium
Music has been central to the Church’s worship from the earliest days. In particular, the Church has long recognized singing as integral to the liturgy. Through sacred music, God is glorified and his people are sanctified.
Choral singing is both a source of beauty and unity as members of the choir offer to God the gift He has given them, joining with others who are doing the same. There are several choral groups at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception. The Liturgical Choir sings once a month at the 10am Mass and for special occasions. This group specializes in the masterworks of the choral tradition, adding solemnity to the Cathedral’s worship. There are also two scholas, a Men’s Schola and a Women’s Schola, each of which sings for the 10am Mass every other week. “Schola” is the Latin word for school and denotes a group dedicated to the study of Gregorian chant. The Scholas sing the Proper of the Mass (the entrance, offertory, and communion chants) in English and Latin. All choirs rehearse on Thursday evenings.
